Knee replacement

Knee replacement

This illustration summarizes the exposure, bone preparation, and metal and plastic implants used in knee joint replacement, or total knee arthroplasty. The surfaces of the distal femur (thigh) bone, proximal tibia (leg) bone, and patella (kneecap) are removed with a bone saw, holes are drilled to fit the implants, and bone cement is used to hold them in place.
